FitzRoy House Glenfern Sanctuary
Great Barrier Island is the largest island off the coast of NZ other than the 3 main islands. It is covered by mainly indigenous forest with 70% under the control of the Department of Conservation. It is home to several endangered flora and fauna some of which is extinct on the mainland.
FitzRoy House provides a self contained cottage for up to 6 people and runs guided tours through Glenfern Sanctuary which is part of the Kotuku Ecological Peninsula.
We operate a tramp/sail package utilizing the many tramping trails on the island and returning via sailboat on the Port FitzRoy harbour. The peninsula is managed by our staff where we control rats and cats, our two main pest species.
We propagate and plant native trees throughout the Sanctuary and have been doing this for the last 10 years. In 2005 we released North Island robins into the Sanctuary that have been extinct on the island for 140 years. We generate our own power mainly from solar and reticulate our own water.
