In 1974 the Old Fashioned Milk Paint Company recreated an ancient formula of genuine milk paint- a typical Colonial & Shaker finish, used for centuries before the sale of commercially made paints. One of the earliest paints known, it comes in rich colors that are durable and do not fade, and has a very distinct, velvety appearance.

Milk paint is known to be extremely hard to remove- it hardens as it cures, just like concrete. Also, since it is made from elements that pre-date the use of petrochemicals and other toxic bases and solvents, it is non-toxic, and odor-free when dry. We have been making a totally 'green' paint for over 35 years- long before the word 'green' was used to describe an environmentally safe product.

Keeping true to the early homemade, all-natural formulas on record, we formulated the paint in powder form to avoid using preservatives. For that reason our milk paint has the smallest carbon footprint of any paint on the market- we are not shipping water. A gallon package of paint weighs a few lbs., compared to 10 or 11 lbs. with commercial paint. It is very easy to use- the user just adds water & mixes to make paint. It can be thinned and used as a wash or stain, or as a full cover coat.

It is 100% biodegradable, with zero voc's. It is preferred by those who are chemically sensitive, and by those sensitive to the need to protect the environment. Consumers are asking for it. Artists, painters and finishers are breathing easier using it in their work.

It is popular not only for its environmental benefits but for its classic beauty as well. It is widely used for furniture, cabinetry, store fixtures, residential and commercial interiors. A new milk paint formulation especially for walls and other nonporous surfaces- even metal- has recently been introduced, called SafePaint, and is fast becoming just as popular as the original formula.
