Ecoffins

Ecoffins are hand woven from organic sustainable materials, available in six unique casket styles; four coffin patterns and six cremation ashes urns. Standard sizes accommodate adults up to 325 pounds; smaller sizes are suitable for children and infants, or even a beloved family pet.

Ecoffins manufactures their entire product line using only environmentally sustainable material:
Bamboo-- not the species consumed by pandas-- the ultimate sustainable material, grown and harvested in licensed plantations (when cut down at the root, bamboo takes just 59 days to grow back to full height without the need for replanting);
Pandanus an environmentally friendly alternative to sea grass (currently under threat from coastal development, dredging and urban expansion);
Willow, cut from bushes known as crowns which remain harvestable for approximately 40 years before they need to be replanted; and
Banana, woven from the sheaves that come from the trunk of the plant which peel off naturally each year.
All items are shipped complete with cotton liners. Caskets and coffins include a waterproof cotton shroud and bamboo headrest.

A popular choice for woodland burials, Ecoffins will biodegrade naturally along with the body, leaving nothing behind but human remains within six months to one year from the time of burial.

Also appropriate for cremation, an added benefit is the lack of toxins released into the environment during the cremation process. Burn reports issued by crematories show low levels of particulate matter from bamboo coffins and a carbon monoxide reading of zero. In fact, there are less harmful emissions given off from an Ecoffin than those from the human body itself.
