Coates Design understands that the modern architect as a designer of buildings, but must be held accountable for the ensuing environmental, economic and social impacts that every project makes in our world environment. The firm’s managing partner, Matthew Coates, achieved international acclaim by winning the “Cradle to Cradle (C2C) Home” Design Competition in 2005 and used this creative momentum to create a firm dedicated to gracious, sustainable design.

Team members with backgrounds in design, construction and the fine arts, transform complex design challenges into elegant solutions. The Coates Design process is fluid and focused. Each assignment is unique yet there is one constant; solutions are a direct manifestation of client aspirations, goals, economic means and environmental context.

Matthew Coates carries a personal passion for projects that contribute a “greater good” to our local and international communities. He actively pursues work that allows the firm to create responsible, modern and elegant design solutions.

Coates Design is a ten person architectural firm located in Seattle, Washington. The firm specializes in residential, museum, mixed use and commercial design. Services include architecture, programming and planning, site planning and sustainable design.

Within the past few years some of their projects include the first LEED Platinum residence outside the Seattle City limits, and a LEED Gold children’s museum.
