Compassion in World Farming

Compassion in World Farming (CIWF) is advancing farm animal welfare globally, to make the world a better place for farm animals. We achieve this through comprehensive research, education and undercover investigations, not only in the UK but also internationally.

Factory farming involves considerable suffering for farm animals the world over; below are some exapmles: Pigs are often reared in barren and crowded conditions. This creates an unnatural , stressed environment. Frustrated, the pigs can become aggressive. This can lead to abnormal behaviours such as tail biting.

In many parts of the world, sows (female pigs) spend their pregnancies in sow stalls. Individually caged, they are unable even to turn around.

Meat chickens are also reared in cowded conditions. As the birds grow this issue becomes more severe, resulting in difficulties feeding and exercising. Intensively reared chickens suffer from lameness and heart failure as a result of fast growth caused by selective breeding and concentrated feed.

The average intensively farmed hen is given less space than an A4 piece of paper - this prevents her from even spreading her wings. The constant demands of egg production, coupled with the lack of opportunity to exercise, can cause the hens bones to deteriorate, often becoming brittle and broken.

CIWF believes that factory farming should be replaced by humane farming systems that do not compromise animal welfare. Many alternative systems already exist showing that it is economically viable to achieve this objective.
