ECO ISSUES
Global warming leads the list of eco issues. Ever since the production of An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore in the U.S. there is little doubt about global warming. Carbon dioxide is the culprit. It acts as a blanket around the planet and traps the sunlight to raise the temperature of the atmosphere. Most of the carbon dioxide comes from the burning of fossil fuels – oil, natural gas, coal, gasoline, diesel fuel and jet fuel.
That is why alternative energy is such an important eco issue. Alternatives range from solar power to wind turbines as well as geothermal sources. Electric cars and buses and trucks eliminate the source of the carbon dioxide. Hybrids are the next best thing.
Forest preservation is so important for several reasons. Trees take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen. But, more important are all the life forms that exist in a forest. We are losing species of animals at an alarming rate with each acre or hectare of forest we burn.
Biodiversity is being lost.
Sustainable living happens through communities that are designed to be self-sufficient. The buildings are LEED certified, the wastewater is treated and reused, recyclable products are sold, and public transportation is available. These sustainable living communities are carbon neutral and produce more energy than they use. These communities are considered safe environments.
Recycling has become a way of life for most people and most communities. The latest trend is to collect all recyclables as one unit without separation. The towns and cities that have switched to this type of collection find there are more materials being recycled. There are disposal plants that sort the materials on conveyor belts, and bale the products to be sold. The cities and towns profit from the sale of the recyclables.
Emission control and pollution prevention are also eco issues. Becoming aware of companies that serve our environmental needs is the first step in improving our biosphere. |
