The annual GreenDrinks summer BBQ at Jericho Park is a good opportunity to meet people who share your interest in taking action on climate change and other environmental issues while enjoying a picnic at the beach. Groups attending this year include GreenDrinks, VTACC, Climate Cafes, Be the Change, and Peak Oil Vancouver. If you want to catch up on who is doing what at the grassroots level in Vancouver this is your chance!

The BBQ is a largely self-organised event, so BYO food (including plates & utensils), games (bocce, frisbee, hula-hoops etc.), and acoustic musical instruments. We expect to have one or two communal BBQs, but if you have one you can bring down please do. Please help minimize clean up by taking home what you bring out to the park.

The BBQ is a great chance to network and share ideas. If you are involved in any other community-building, grassroots environmental efforts, feel free to bring along some information to share with others, but keep these guidelines in mind: no advertising banners, no sales, no amplified sound, and please take away any left over materials when you leave.

Jul 30, 2008: Green Drinks Summer BBQ at Jericho Beach     |    30 Jul 08, 06:07:00
If you've wanted to catch up on who is doing what in the bustling arena of grassroots action in Vancouver, here's your chance!

The folks who organise the monthly Green Drinks social event in Vancouver have generously invited a number of community-minded groups to join them for their annual summer BBQ at Jericho Park. This is a good opportunity to spend an evening picnicing at the beach while socialising with people who share your interest in taking action on global warming and other environmental issues.

Invited groups include: VTACC, Climate Cafe, Community Climate Change/Global Warming Cafe, Be The Change, Village Vancouver, Boiling Point Action Network, Relocalize/Post Carbon/Peak Oil Vancouver, BCSEA, and others. The Tyee has also agreed to announce the winner of their Green Your Campbell cash campaign (http://contest.thetyee.ca/greenyourcampbellcash/) at the BBQ.

The BBQ is a largely self-organised event, so BYO food, frisbees, croquet, acquostic musical instruments, bocce, badminton and so on. One or two communal BBQs will be available to use, and feel free to bring (and share!) your own BBQ equipment as well. Everyone is striving to make this a low impact event, so please avoid disposables, and pack out what you pack in.

Please RSVP to Green Drinks if plan to attend so that they can gauge the number of people to expect: greendrinksvancouver@gmail.com Remember: July 30th is also a fireworks night.

(If you are involved in any other community-building, grassroots environmental efforts, you are welcome to bring information to share with others, but keep these guidelines in mind: no advertising banners, no sales, no amplified sound, and please take away any left over materials when you leave. Thanks!)

We hope to meet you at Jericho on the 30th!

want to make a difference? yarrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

The Youth Activist Retreat is a free, five-day overnight camp that brings together activists aged 16-20. YAR is a great place to meet other young folks who are interested in social change and to learn new skills and ideas.

YAR 2008 is being held August 4th to 8th in Clearwater, Manitoba.

During the week of the retreat, participants will take part in workshops and other events to learn from other experienced activists about different political struggles and issues.

The retreat offers a variety of workshops to accommodate all levels of experience. Whether you just want to sit back and listen, or work with others to develop strategies for organizing, YAR is a great place to meet other youth who care about similar issues.

Workshops are taught by people who have experience working for social change, including organizers, activists, and artists.

Some of this year's workshops will include Worker's Rights and Unions, Anti-Racism, Colonization in Canada, Ecological Justice, Gender Oppression and Heteroseism, Direct Action, and many others. There will also be creative workshops offered on silk-screening, radio, puppet-making, and zines!

The retreat is completely free; all that is asked for is your time and commitment. Some travel subsidies are available for people who live outside of Winnipeg.

YAR is an anti-racist, LGBT*-positive event, and is wheelchair accessible.

Touching Enlightenment with Dr. Reggie Ray
HollyHock, Cortes Island, BC August 6-10, 2008

Date: August 6-10, 2008
Venue: HollyHock, Cortes Island, BC

When we look at the body from the outside, we see something ordinary. But when we view it through the eye of meditation, we find it holds innumerable interpenetrating realities. It is a harbinger of our inconceivable life as it is coming to birth. Exploring the inner space of the body brings us face to face with our own deepest unfolding journey.

Reggie Ray, Ph.D., has 38 years of study and intensive meditation practice within the Tibetan tradition as well as a special gift for applying it to the unique problems, inspirations, and spiritual imperatives of modern people. On the faculty of Naropa University since its inception, he is the author of Touching Enlightenment, Indestructible Truth, Secret of the Vajra World, Buddhists Saints in India and In the Presence of Masters.

Abandon your fast life for one day of S L O W and join SLOW FOOD CYCLE TOURS. Come to Agassiz (120km east of Vancouver) on Saturday, August 9th to participate in a self-guided bicycle ride following the popular Circle Farm Tour. Agassiz, right next door to the popular Harrison Hot Springs, is where you'll embark on a leisurely cycle and learn more about local food production. Riding your bicycle, you will get to experience and taste local food products produced close to home, while getting to know and supporting your local farmers.
SLOW FOOD Vancouver and the farmers of Agassiz are hosting this culinary adventure that will explore several farms. Some farms will be open to the public for this day only. For example, you will have a rare glimpse of a large commercial dairy farm, and visit a sustainable land-based salmon farm. Many stops will feature special events, guided tours around specialty farms, and gourmet foods prepared with crops from Agassiz producers to sample and purchase.
You can enjoy a swim in Harrison Lake after your ride and then finish the day off with the soothing sounds of John Gilliat's classical and latin guitar in a free concert on the beach between 4 - 7 pm, weather permitting.
There are two new farms on the tour this year, Swift Aquaculture and Cordine Farm, and harpist Mary Murphy will serenade you at The Back Porch, a small acre farm that grows 25 varieties of garlic and roasts coffee using a circa 1919 Flame Roaster.

For bike rental and bus transportation information visit our website and go to "Planning Your Weekend".
