1st International AVIATION CO2 Conference     |    28 Aug 08, 12:08:00
The 1st AVIATION CO2 conference will be held on September 8-10, 2008 in Budapest, Hungary. The event will address the most current policy and technology related issues in the aviation industry, and aims to focus on significant solutions of Sustainable Transport. In spite of continuous technological development, aviation remains a substantial contributor to climate change through different emissions. Although the aviation industry is not covered by the Kyoto Protocol, certain restrictive measures are expected to be introduced in the future. The increasing demand for mobility is the driving engine of continuous development and capacity improvement. In the forthcoming years an unprecedented need will dominate for technical development and the introduction of new technologies. Growing concern for the environment requires more attention from both equipment suppliers and airlines. The measurable harmful effect of greenhouse gas emissions on our climate is forcing us to change our consuming habits and to mitigate pollution. Conference participants are expected from international organizations, the European Commission, Government agencies, major airlines and aerospace manufacturers. The key objectives are dissemination and promotion of good practices in aviation with a special attention on climate, energy and environment related issues. The AVIATION CO2 conference is about to set an example for a constructive dialogue between governments, policy makers and business. It will give you and your colleagues an opportunity to let others know what you have already achieved and to actively initiate and participate in discussions and to raise issues concerning your business.

The conference aims to focus on the significant solutions of Sustainable Transport and to gather worldwide successful strategies that have been implemented. The key objectives are dissemination and promotion of good practices in aviation with a special attention on climate, energy and environment related issues. The fields of interest include passenger and cargo transport, equipment, customer service and other related areas.

The purpose of the Conference is to create a platform for exchange of information between scientists, entrepreneurs and policy makers. Oils and fuels are a very important element of energy security, while causing environmental consequences. In this regard, the subject of discussion will be environmentally friendly methods of production, transport, use, recovery and disposal of oil and fuel. The Conference will be structured around the following core topics: Oil Sands and Oil Shale, Lubricants, SynFuels, BioFuels, Petroleum and Methane. The sessions crossing the above issues horizontally are: CO2 sequestration and Emission Trading, Cleaner Production, Environmental Accidents. With core sessions, exhibition, poster sessions, study visits, pre-conference trainings and post-conference workshops, the Conference programme is being updated to satisfy all participants` expectations. Clearing the Air on NSR     |    28 Aug 08, 12:08:00
The Air & Waste Management Association (A&WMA) will offer its industry-leading workshop, “Clearing the Air on NSR,†September 18 –19, in Orlando, FL. This workshop will discuss the regulatory requirements for the New Source Review (NSR) Rule for fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) issued by the Environmental Protection Agency in May 2008, information relevant to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2007 decision in Environmental Defense et al vs. Duke Energy Corporation, and key provisions to the New Source Review regulations.

The objectives of the workshop are specifically: •to strengthen and improve the multidisciplinary approach to climate change related issues •to generate ideas for joint research projects •to meet potential research partners Workshop topics include: * Causes of climate change impacts -Which meteorological extreme events do we expect to increase in SEE? -Which patterns of land use change do contribute to the severity of hydrological extremes? * Impacts on ecological and (socio-)economic systems and vulnerability assessment -Which of the extreme events (e. g. Droughts, Floods, Forest fires, Windthrows, Erosion, etc.) have the most severe impacts on the landscape in SEE? -What are the mid- and long-term impacts on ecology? -Which of the ecological and environmental problems in SEE will be aggravated by climate change? -Which regions and economic sectors are most vulnerable to climate change? -Are the climate change impacts likely to hit poor citizens more severely? * Solutions for adaptation and mitigation -Which technical adaptation options are feasible and necessary? -Which economic and financial instruments are suitable for the most vulnerable regions and economic sectors to adapt to climate change? -Are there new appropriate technical mitigation options (e. g. carbon capture and storage, algae, etc.) for which SEE has comparative advantages? -What are the future climate policy options (Post- Kyoto) in SEE (e. g. domestic offset projects, green investment schemes, joint implementation, clean development mechanism, emissions trading, etc.)? -Which synergies between adaptation and mitigation policies should be exploited (e. g. meeting the future heating and cooling energy demand by carbon neutral technology, afforestation/reforestation and flood prevention, etc.)? -Which sustainability criteria need to be considered for biomass production systems? For participation, researchers are encouraged to prepare either or both … •Abstracts for presentations for this year's workshop's topics •Proposals / outlines of ideas for joint research projects (for the purpose of coordination) … by 28th July 2008 to climate@joanneum.at (Cornelia Sterner). Abstracts for presentations and proposals / outlines of ideas will be selected and coordinated in order to ensure appropriate coverage of topics and ideas at the workshop
